Carbon monoxide always sounded like a dramatic emergency. What I didn’t realize was how quietly it belonged in the same conversation as everything else I was learning about indoor air.

I wasn’t forgetting everything. I just felt like thinking required more effort than it should. Decisions tired me out. Focus drained quickly. It wasn’t confusion — it was the sense that my mind was carrying more weight than it used to.

Radon always sounded distant and abstract to me. It wasn’t until I understood how quietly it fits into everyday homes that it started to feel relevant.

I was resting. I was lying down. I was technically doing everything right. And yet I kept waking up feeling like my body had never fully let go — as if rest happened on the surface, but not deep enough to count.

I loved cooking, so I didn’t expect it to be connected to how I felt afterward. What surprised me was how consistently my body reacted to something so routine.

I didn’t lose my emotions. I lost room for them. Small things felt like too much. Conversations drained me faster. It wasn’t that I cared less — it was that my system had less space to hold everything at once.

I kept cracking windows and changing sheets, but the air in my bedroom still felt heavy. It wasn’t until I paid attention to patterns that the picture became clearer.

Some days I felt almost normal. Other days, the same space felt heavier, louder, harder to tolerate. The inconsistency made me doubt myself — until I realized variability was part of the pattern, not a sign that I was imagining it.

I kept looking at my body for answers. It wasn’t until I widened the lens to include my home that everything started to connect.

I wasn’t sick in a way I could name. I was just slower, foggier, more easily depleted. Life still worked — it just took more out of me than it used to, and I couldn’t explain why.
