I wanted air purifiers to be a clear yes or no. What I learned instead was how much depended on context — and on how my body responded over time.

I didn’t feel worried about anything specific. My thoughts were calm. But my body stayed tense, restless, and keyed up indoors — creating an anxiety-like state without an anxious story to match.

I thought changing my HVAC filter was about doing it “right.” What I learned instead was how much pressure I’d quietly put on myself to get it perfect.

I kept waiting for something dramatic to happen. What I missed were the small, repeating signals my body was sending every day.

I kept expecting relief that never fully arrived. Medications dulled symptoms at times, but the pattern stayed. What finally made sense was realizing the problem wasn’t inside my body alone — it was in the air around it.

I thought testing my air would finally give me certainty. What it actually gave me was context — and that turned out to be far more calming.

I wasn’t dizzy. I wasn’t weak. I just felt slightly off — like my body needed more effort to stay oriented indoors, especially in spaces where I otherwise felt “fine.”

I didn’t ignore indoor air problems because I didn’t care. I ignored them because the myths sounded reassuring — and reassurance felt safer than uncertainty.

I wasn’t anxious in the way people describe anxiety. I just never fully settled. My body stayed slightly braced indoors, like it was waiting for something to go wrong — even when nothing was happening.
