Calm Guidance

As my body stabilized, comparison crept in. Other people seemed to be moving forward while I was still catching up. I didn’t realize how much recovery distorts your sense of timing — and how quietly that can hurt.

I expected energy to return the way symptoms left — gradually, but clearly. Instead, it showed up in fragments. A good morning followed by a drained afternoon. It took time to understand that energy doesn’t rebound linearly after long-term stress.

After the intensity of illness faded, I expected emotion to rush back in. Instead, things felt muted. I wasn’t sad or distressed — just strangely flat. It took time to understand that numbness wasn’t a setback, but a phase of recovery I hadn’t expected.

When my body finally gave me lighter days, I didn’t feel relief the way I expected. Instead, enjoyment came with guilt — like something bad would follow if I let myself relax too much.
