I kept expecting recovery to move forward in a straight line. When it didn’t, I assumed something was wrong. What I eventually learned was that the unevenness wasn’t a failure — it was the process.

I expected recovery to feel physical — less pain, more energy, fewer symptoms. What I didn’t expect was how emotionally exposed I felt once my body started to come out of survival mode.

At some point, the symptoms themselves weren’t the hardest part — it was the fear that followed them. I began to realize I wasn’t just reacting to how my body felt, but to what those feelings had come to mean.

I expected healing to feel obvious — a steady upward climb with fewer questions. Instead, when recovery actually began working, it looked quieter, slower, and far less dramatic than I imagined.

I noticed it on short errands at first. I’d feel clearer, calmer, almost normal — then return home and crash. It made me question whether my body was imagining things or responding to something real.

When my heart raced and my thoughts spiraled, I kept asking whether this was “just anxiety” — or whether my body was still responding to what it had lived through. The uncertainty made everything louder.

The moment I started to feel steady again, a familiar symptom returned — and I panicked. I thought I was relapsing. What I later understood changed how I interpreted every flare that followed.
