I wanted duct cleaning to be the answer. It felt concrete. Do the cleaning, remove the problem. What I learned instead was that duct cleaning doesn’t automatically reduce mold exposure — and in the wrong context, it can actually make things feel worse before anyone understands why.

When I finally considered HVAC cleaning, it felt like a logical next step. Remove what’s dirty, fix the problem. What I didn’t realize yet was that cleaning isn’t neutral — and that depending on timing, method, and underlying conditions, it can either help clarify what’s going on or quietly make symptoms worse.

I did everything I was told to do. Annual servicing. Clean components. Fresh filters. On paper, my HVAC system was “well maintained.” But my body kept reacting. What I didn’t understand yet was that maintenance focuses on performance — not on whether the air itself is actually safe to live in.

Changing the filter helped — just not in the way I expected. The air felt lighter. The house smelled cleaner. And yet, my symptoms stayed. What I didn’t understand yet was that improving air quality and resolving exposure aren’t always the same thing.

I assumed higher meant safer. A bigger number felt like better protection. What I didn’t understand yet was that MERV ratings don’t exist in a vacuum — they interact with airflow, pressure, and the way a home breathes. And in some cases, chasing the highest rating can quietly make indoor air feel worse.

Once I realized filters weren’t a cure-all, I went looking for “better” ones. HEPA. High MERV. Activated carbon. Each promised cleaner air. What I didn’t understand yet was that each type of filter solves a different problem — and that using the wrong one for the wrong issue can quietly make things worse.

I thought changing the filter meant I was doing my part. New filter in, problem solved. What I didn’t understand yet was what HVAC filters are actually designed to do — and how much responsibility I was placing on something that was never meant to protect my health.

I thought the dust would settle once the work was done. What I didn’t realize was how renovation particles linger, resurface, and quietly affect indoor air quality long after the noise and mess are gone.

This was one of the most unsettling realizations for me. The air felt fine in one room — even calming — while another made my chest tighten and my thoughts race. The HVAC system was the same. The house was the same. What changed was how air moved, settled, and interacted with each space.
