I didn’t become more sensitive overnight. What changed was my margin. Over time, the same air that once felt tolerable began to feel heavier, harder to recover from, and more disruptive to my baseline.

Even when nothing was improving, escalating the situation felt dangerous. I learned that fear of escalation isn’t about drama — it’s about understanding how little protection renters often feel they actually have.

I wasn’t running a fever. I wasn’t sick. But my body couldn’t seem to settle into a comfortable temperature indoors. Too warm. Too cold. Fluctuating without a clear reason.

Once mold entered the picture, I didn’t feel decisive — I felt stuck. I learned that freezing wasn’t avoidance; it was my nervous system trying to slow things down when the stakes felt too high.

The rest of the house felt tolerable. But something about the bedroom made symptoms louder. Sleep felt lighter. Breathing felt different. Mornings started before my body felt ready.

Even when my health was suffering, I felt guilty for considering leaving. I learned that guilt doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong — it often shows up when safety conflicts with obligation.

My kids weren’t acting “bad.” They were dysregulated. Focus came and went. Emotions escalated faster. What confused me most was how clearly their behavior shifted depending on where we were.

I kept being told to stay calm, be patient, and not overreact. I learned that pressure to appear reasonable can quietly push renters to tolerate conditions that don’t actually feel safe.

I wasn’t exhausted in an obvious way. I just never felt fully restored. No matter how much I slept or slowed down, something in my body stayed slightly unfinished — like rest never quite landed.
